Abstract. The article presents a theoretical and analytical examination of macrosystemic factors shaping the professional retention of employed youth in contemporary Russia. The relevance of the study stems from the contradiction between favorable aggregate labor market dynamics and the continuing instability of young people’s initial professional trajectories. The research problem lies in the fact that employment as such does not automatically lead to sustainable retention in a profession, while the relevant structural and institutional conditions are still treated in Russian scholarship in a fragmented way. The purpose of the article is to systematize the macrosystemic determinants of youth professional retention and to reveal the mechanisms through which they influence the transition from education to stable employment. The methodological basis includes the institutional approach, structural analysis of academic literature, problem-oriented comparison of Russian studies on youth employment, precarization, graduate transition to work, job quality, and professional trajectories, as well as the interpretation of official labor market statistics as the macro-context of the analysis. The article distinguishes between mere employment and professional retention, the latter being understood as stable inclusion of a young person in a professional field with opportunities for using competencies, accumulating experience, advancing in a career, and maintaining profile-related employment. It is shown that professional retention depends not only on individual motivation but primarily on labor demand configuration, the quality of available jobs, the coordination between education and the labor market, the regional and sectoral structure of the economy, and institutional channels of first employment. The article concludes that effective youth and personnel policy should focus not only on employment rates but also on the sustainability of professional trajectories.
