Abstract. This article is devoted to the identification of the frequency indicators of semantic characteristics of image-metaphors on the material of the anti-utopian novels by G. Orwel «1984», O. Huxley «Brave New World» and «Ape and Essence», R. Bradbudy «451 Fahrenheit». The article under consideration represents part of the results of the dissertation research. The purpose of our study is to fulfill a complex analysis of the qualitative and quantitative specifications of diagnostic semantic characteristics that make up the structural components of the semantic field. Semantic field is a certain set of diagnostic semantic features organized into a certain structure. Scientific novelty of our research lies in the consideration of the structural components of the semantic space at the intersection of philology, quantitative linguistics and lexical semantics. First, we have identified 12 semantic features, organized within four semantic plans: «anthropological» (anthropo-somatic, anthropo-mental features), «social» (socio-personal, socio-non-personal features), «naturalistic» (natural-biogenic, natural-abiogenic features) and «ontological» (onto-material, onto-non-material). Then, with a help of frequency analysis, we established frequency relevant semantic characteristics. The next task is to connect the results of the scientific research with the plot of these novels and to determine the degree of apocalyptic storyline. The results if this research, based on the parameter of oppositions, showed that O. Huxley’s novel «Brave New World» is recognized as a differentially marked one. Scientific study methods of the research, as well as the conclusions, drawn from this study can be used in the analysis of a literary text, in the courses of stylistics, lexical semantics, and text interpretation.
Keywords: image-metaphor; anti-utopian novel; semantic characteristics; statistically relevant semantic characteristics; frequency analysis; opposition; plot parallels
