Abstract. The plot is an idea saturable with content and put on form. The idea reflects the patterns of our reality, comprehended and refracted through the views of the artist. The idea can be interpreted depending on the type of art, on historical period with a certain range of artistic laws and means of embodiment, on the genre with its inherent features. The stories that migrate through times, countries and genres, contributing to the extension of their artistic life, are particularly interesting. One of the kind is the fairy tales genre. The object of this study is H. Andersen’s fairy tale «The Ice Maiden». The subject is the interpretation of the plot in various forms of art. The world-famous fairy tale «The Ice Maiden» (widely known as the «Snow Queen») is the lightest, humanistic of Andersen’s fairy tales, formed the basis of many subjects of art works in different kinds of art: literature, poetry, music, animation. In the article the authors consider different plot-archetype variants: from the poetry (the Apukhtin’s «The Ice Maiden» ballad); from the music (the Stravinsky’s «The Kiss of the Fairy» ballet), from the animation (the American cartoon «Ice Maiden»), as well as the national animated film («The Snow Queen»).

In these works the presentation of the main characters considerably differs, like a situation of the meeting of Snow Queen and Kay. The method of enchanting also has different artistic solutions. Differences in unfolding situations affect the character of the main characters’ relationships. The authors approached the solution of the plot in different ways. In each case, the language solution of works is original, too. Andersen is extremely talented and brightly drawn to the method of symbolism. In the ballad of Apukhtin, on the contrary, the poetic language lacks of extra allegory and hidden meaning. Stravinsky is remarkable for the extraordinary originality of his musical decisions. In this case, this is manifested in the courage and appropriateness of using quotations from the works of Tchaikovsky. First of all, the authors mark out dialogicality and illustrativeness from compositional techniques. All of them are powerful tools for strengthening the general drama, giving it expressiveness, convexity of images, flexibility and persuasiveness.

Interpretations of the main plot reflect different rotations of the general storyline and, as a result, implement the individual dramatic decisions, giving them different meanings, and forming various concepts.
