Abstract. Reading and understanding fiction is a necessary condition for the formation of a human being and a citizen. It is literature that is able to develop deep and stable feelings in the reader, forming a worldview that determines purposeful activity in the name of the values of humanity and humanism. Thus, the poetic text, emotionally affecting the reader, is able to include him/her in the context of the culture of our Motherland, because the poetic word has multiple meanings and associativity.
For a qualitative perception of a poetic text it is always important not only the language of the work itself, its semantic content, but also the general cultural background, i.e. the author’s comprehension of some cultural facts, the reader’s knowledge of the poet’s worldview of the surrounding historical realities. We are talking about the application of anthropocentric (the aspect of correlation «author — text — reader») and cognitive (the aspect of correlation «author — text — extra-text activity») approaches in the comprehension of an artistic work. Thus, the image-symbol of a poetic text, considered in the context of a particular era, information about the biography of the poet and the history of creation of the work, is able to undergo a semantic transformation in the perception of the reader, significantly pushing the boundaries of a particular text.
The presented article deals with the issue of transformation of the image-symbol in the early work of Alexander Blok. It offers an analysis of the poem «I, a youth, light candles…» from the cycle of poems «About the Beautiful Lady», made on the basis of the above-mentioned approaches. The purpose of the article is to expand readers’ understanding of the personality and early work of Alexander Blok.
