Abstract. The article discusses the study of slang as an important part of sociolinguistics and a modern linguistic phenomenon that reflects cultural and social changes in the society. The paper emphasizes that nowadays slang has become widespread, and it is an active component of a living spoken language in modern English. The main aim of the work is to study the lexical and stylistic characteristics of youth slang and understand its role in modern communication. The study analyses the features of English youth slang, based on examples from English-language films, since films often become a source of disseminating new slang expressions and reflect youth culture and language on the screen. The attention is focused on the theoretical justification of the problem of developing sociolinguistics as a science that studies the social aspects of language, the history of studying the issue, the basic concepts of sociolinguistics, the paper describes in detail youth slang, which is an expressive and emotionally charged vocabulary of colloquial speech that deviates from the literary language norms. The reasons for using slang by young people are presented; the linguistic features of youth slang in English-language films are considered, including applying discursive verbs, interjections, borrowings from surf-riders’ slang, abbreviations, set expressions, adjectives and changed intonation (Uptalk). The work concludes that slang helps to stylize the film speech of characters belonging to the youth age group, making communication between them more relaxed, informal and humorous. It is noted that slang is a moving and changing linguistic category, so its study requires constant updating of knowledge and analysing new trends.
