Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the functioning of neologisms contained in a large number in the modern mass media discourse (on the example of online magazines). The object of the study is online magazines of popular orientation, devoted to culture, science, youth, fashion and covering a wide target audience: “Culture Magazine”, “Scientific American”, “Vogue”, “Youth Leader Magazine”. The author justified the relevance of the study, which consists in the objective need for careful study and description of neologisms in the English mass media discourse (on the example of online magazines), which reacts most quickly to new linguistic phenomena and forms a rich linguistic picture. The concept of neologism according to the stylistic, psycholinguistic, lexicographical, denotative, concrete-historical theories of neologisms was revealed. The author used the method of linguistic analysis, which allowed determining the way of formation of neologisms and its productivity. Neologisms obtained by the continuous sampling method were distributed according to the way of formation into neologisms formed by: derivation, reverse derivation, word compounding, acquisition of a new meaning by a word, contamination, borrowing, conversion, reduction, creation of a new phrase. The productivity of each of the above mentioned ways of neologisms’ formation was determined. The most productive way is the creation of a new phrase (30 %). The results of the research can be useful for linguists, practicing translators and students learning a foreign language. The author also believes that the results of the study of neologisms on the example of English-language online magazines will help not only to enrich such a section of lexicology as neology, but also to see clearly the current priorities and trends of society, as the new vocabulary is a reflection of culture and values.

Keywords: neologisms; mass media discourse; online magazines borrowings; word compounding; productive way of neologisms formation
