Abstract. The aim of the work is the analysis of the essence of psychological impact of informational internet media texts. As research material the author selected thirty news media texts of the British channel BBC and the American channel CNN. In the beginning the author considers some theoretical points connected with psychological impact, namely its main components – persuasion and suggestion. It is pointed out that suggestion is chiefly based on the emotional component while persuasion is more conditioned by logic and argumentation. Further the author speaks of the role of manipulation in the impact on the audience and underlines its implicit character. In the practical part of the article the author mentions that along with the selection of material and the way it is arranged in the news reel, the major role is played by linguistic means, such as vocabulary and grammar. The author gives a number of examples from recent media texts covering coronavirus pandemic and presents a detailed analysis of linguistic features aimed at forming the reader’s opinion on current events, namely, the choice of lexical units, mostly those of emotional character, and grammar means, such as the wide use of passive constructions, present tenses, nominal word combinations and others. Relying on the analysis conducted, at the end of the article the author draws a conclusion that linguistic means play a leading role in achieving the psychological impact on the reader, mostly, in the implicit way.
