Abstract. This article is devoted to the research of a culture-specific lexis in the modern conversational English Language. The authors study the cross-level lexis, formed on the basis of cultural references to mass culture phenomena, which entered conversational English of the representatives of English-speaking community. The cross-level lexis is understood as lexis, whose signification reflects both referential meaning and connotative meanings derived from mass culture sources of those language units and the language sign of this unit traces its origin from these mass culture phenomena. The authors identify the sources of origin of such culture-specific units, analyze their structure, their etymology, semantic mechanisms of their formation, distinguish their connotative meanings and systemize these language units according to their structure. The relevance of the topic is predetermined by the difficulties of recognition of such units by the representative of other communities. To these goals the authors employ the continuum sampling method, descriptive method, conceptual analysis, onomasiological analysis, associative method. According to the result of their research the authors distinguish the following language units in the culture-specific lexis: lexemes, phrasemes and abbreviations. The authors specify the phenomena of further lexicalization and acquire the further characteristics of lexemes. The authors also distinguish the cases of mixed etymology, as well as the cases of a semantic drift of the lexical meaning of culture-specific language units under the influence of other phenomena of mass culture. The authors come to the conclusion that the most expedient approach to the study of culture-specific language units is an integrated approach.
