The phenomenon of transgender in world culture

Abstract. Based on the analysis of historical and anthropological materials, as well as the author’s research conducted in 2016, the article considers the phenomenon of transgender people in the world culture. An attempt is made to analyze the degree of prevalence of the phenomenon in culture. Against the background of the «transgender revolution» and changes in sociocultural reality, the problem of gender identity and self-identification is particularly acute. Mention of transgender people can be found in the myths of ancient Greece, the French history of the XVI-XVIII centuries. Transgender people meet in primitive tribes around the world. In India and Thailand, there are castes transgender people. In modern culture, issues of transgender affect writers and writers. In the world rolling out films about transgender people, raising issues of self-identification, the problems of perception itself, and the conflict with the outside world. In the books, the writers spin completely new stories based on the change of sex and the attitude of the societies to transgender people. World companies such as L’oreal, Toyota, Sony Ericsson shoot transgender models in their commercials. Every year on 20 November the world celebrates the day of remembrance of transgender victims of violence motivated by hatred on the grounds of transgender identity.
