Abstract. This paper discusses the main strategies for translating medical terms and abbreviations. Modern medicine regularly uses abundance of narrowly focused terms and abbreviations, which are hardly deciphered and given an adequate definition. They can be found in medical records, reports, patient’s disease history and they are also often found in TV series dedicated to the difficult, but extremely exciting doctor’s life. Examples of using translation strategies based on video materials of foreign surgeons’ presentations are given in the research. Specific examples of medical terms and abbreviations translation are provided, as well as the analysis of the translation of video performances fragments based on some of the described strategies. Special attention is paid to the difficulties of medical terminology translation and terms diversity in different branches of medicine. The paper also touches upon the importance and increasing relevance of medical translation. The authors carried out work on the search for translation strategies and their analysis for further use when working with medical texts. The conclusion is made that medical translations will always be demanded and relevant, and medical translator/interpreter should not only be competent in languages and translation instruments but also know terminology. As a result of the study, based on specific examples of speeches by English-speaking surgeons, strategies for translating medical texts, terms and abbreviations were analyzed. Specific examples of possible applications are given for each of the analyzed strategy. All the fragments of speeches given in the paper are publicly available.
