Abstract. In modern society takes place a transformation of moral and value attitudes in gender relations, as a result of which the differences between the social functions performed by men and women are leveled, while the phenomenon of «multiple identity» is developing, when a person gets freedom to build his own model of sexual behavior. The formation of gender identity occurs under the influence of micro-and macro-social factors. The macro-social level has an impact through gender culture, which is fixed in the experience of generations and determines the perception of the accepted interaction between the sexes as natural. Due to the gender culture that affects the individual’s consciousness (microsocial level), a person realizes his inner potential in the areas of activity that most satisfy his actual needs. At the same time, gender plays the role of an implicit barrier in self-realization, limiting the activity of human behavior to the framework of socially approved behavior and areas of activity in which successful implementation is expected, depending on gender. The article presents the results of a sociological study of the manifestation of gender behavior of men and women of generation Y in the social and professional sphere, and also determines the influence of gender stereotypes on the perception of behavior of both sexes. Based on the results obtained, the authors come to the following conclusions: despite the fact that the standards of behavior of men and women are changing in the direction of androgyny, gender stereotypes are more pronounced in relation to women; overcoming gender asymmetry by women occurs mainly by expanding the spheres of social activity and strengthening positions in the professional sphere of activity, and men, in turn, shift the emphasis from professional self-realization to interpersonal relationships.
