Abstract. The article considers the «Travnik chronicle. Time of Consuls» as the most important novel of Ivo Andric. It was supposed to start a triptych, including, as well, Belgrade and Sarajevo chronicles, and become the biggest writing of Ivo Andric, an apogee of his work as a writer and diplomat. In spite of «Bridge over Drina» being the Nobel winning novel, «Travnik chronicle» is more interesting from Historical and cultural viewpoints, for the action takes place in smaller period of time, what moves the accent from history to describing the reality, so that the author could show us the life in his hometown.
The article attempts to consider the novel not only through its plot, but, as well, through the events, connected to its writing and trough Ivo Andric diplomatic career. The article’s purpose is to show the reader that the «Travnic chronicle» is the most important work, due to being a part of triptych, it did require a more significant preparations and resources, and it is the best novel to start the acquaintance with Ivo Andric artworks.
