Abstract. The article analyses the speech portrait of V.V. Zhirinovsky. The aim of the current study was to identify emotional-evaluative nominations based on the characteristic communicative qualities of the politician’s speech. The scientific novelty of the research is the fact that it was the first one to describe and systematize the main elements that verbalize the culture of V.V. Zhirinovsky’s speech. In the course of the study it had been proven that the politician has an average level of speech culture. V.V. Zhirinovsky’s speech was distinguished by its logic and accuracy, simplicity and clarity, its richness was verbalized through the use of such means of artistic expression as metaphors, proverbs and set expressions, rhetorical questions, contrasts, hyperboles, personifications. The following factors influenced the decrease in the level of speech culture: the speed of speech entailed phonetic, lexical and grammatical errors; excessive expressiveness, harshness of statements, as well as situational inappropriateness of the use of colloquial and vernacular units of language, offensive statements became the basis for the appearance in speech of emotional-evaluative nominations with a negative connotation, which speaks in favor of defining the politician’s speech as partially non-normative. The average level of speech culture of V.V. Zhirinovsky did not always allow political opponents to perceive his statements objectively and unemotionally, however, behind the populism of Mr. Zhirinovsky there was always a competent analysis of the political situation, forecasting events taking into account historical and regional factors, which gave him the opportunity to acquire the status of a cult figure in Russian politics.
