Abstract. The article discusses the cognitive mechanisms involved in the formation of concepts functioning in the discourse of sustainable development. The author proceeds from the fact that the discourse of sustainable development unfolds around some acute problems of modern society, concerning its development and existence in the future, therefore, the success of the communicative process and the implementation of sustainable development strategies depend on the accuracy of formulating ideas for making the decisions in the cross-cultural discussion space more.
The article emphasizes the heterogeneity of the cognitive structure of the discourse of sustainable development, due to the convergence of institutional subdiscourses that make up the discourse of sustainable development. The cognitive structures of subdiscourses are represented by the basic concepts belonging to various fields of knowledge, as well as hybrid concepts formed within the cognitive-communicative interaction of communicants, pursuing the goal of most accurately describing the reality around them. Hybrid concepts are precedent phenomena characterized by reinterpretability, i.e. the ability to go beyond the generating discourse and integrate into other subdiscourses of sustainable development in a new interpretation.
The conventionality and flexibility of the discourse of sustainable development contribute to the formation of strong semantic relationships between subdiscourses. As a result new semantic units appear on the basis of cognitive transformations. The article attempts to describe the cognitive mechanisms of transformation of the concepts of sustainable development, involved in the formation of new concepts of the discourse of sustainable development. The author analyzes in detail such mechanisms as cognitive blending, conversion, modal transformation, categorization, conceptualization. The mechanisms of transformation of the concepts of sustainable development are based on various cognitive operations that allow to make a cognitive emphasis on the addresser’s world picture and modify the addressee’s world picture.
