Abstract. In the presented article, based on theoretical and empirical research previously conducted by the author, as well as an analysis of statistical indicators and official data from authorities, the author describes in detail the current state of the social protection system in the Sakhalin region. The main attention is paid to the problems associated with the implementation of social policy in the island region: the need to change the regulatory framework, a decrease in the amount of allocations for social security of the population, the lack of sustainable positive dynamics regarding citizens who find themselves in difficult life situations, the trend towards an increase in the number of persons with disabilities (in including children), difficulties with the provision of medicines and technical means of rehabilitation, an increase in the number of citizens who receive social support who are not classified as needy persons and other related problems. Based on an analysis of the best practices of various constituent entities of the Russian Federation that successfully implement innovative approaches and the most effective practices in the field of social protection of the population, the author of the article develops and describes specific recommendations for increasing the efficiency of this system in the conditions of the island region. The analysis and generalization of the best practices of the regions presented in the article and the practical recommendations developed on their basis can become a starting point for the introduction of innovative approaches in the field of social protection not only in the Sakhalin region, but also in other constituent entities of the Russian Federation, which will significantly increase the efficiency of the social protection system citizens and provide more equitable and high-quality services that meet the needs and characteristics of the population in various regions of our country.
