Abstract. The article is devoted to the theoretical study of Western experience and the generalization of socio-technical studies of non-profit energy communities as an example of effective models for the development of Russian energy communities and the introduction of distributed generation in Russia. The relevance of the article on this topic is due to the need to overcome obstacles in the interaction of society and the technological environment, coordination of the positions of society and production. In Russia, its own generation began to develop relatively recently, which already transfers our country to the category of “catching up”. The main problems hindering the study and implementation of distributed generation are the existing spontaneity of the development of distributed generation, gaps in the legislative framework and the subjective problem that relates to social communities and the psychosocial sphere of man. The article presents the overview position of the conceptual idea of the energy community, as well as gives an idea of the nature of the energy community, its importance for the development of innovative initiatives in the energy sector and the implementation of the broader goals of energy policy. Based on the work of qualitative, longitudinal studies, psychological interviews conducted in various communities that participate in energy initiatives have also been used. If the research will cover the socio-cultural, political and technological aspects, then such initiatives will help to make the energy transition faster and without unnecessary losses, allow creating new forms of social institutions, using new opportunities, and acting outside the boundaries of the institutional space. Community-owned energy initiatives represent a new form of local renewable energy management that deserves scientific attention and research.
