Functional properties of the negation category in Spanish

Abstract. The article examines the linguistic means of expression and functional features of the negation category in Spanish. Considering the negation as a universal linguistic phenomenon the author highlights the most significant features of the category with the help of the lexico-grammatical patterns of the language.

The study is based on various scientific investigations of negation conducted by both Russian and Spanish linguists, and focuses on the inconsistencies within “confirmation – negation” opposition, where a number of peculiarities of negation functioning as an independent category were revealed.

In particular some negative structures were studied in their correlation with the category of linguistic modality. As shown in the work, one of the criteria defining the modality degree of the negation category in Spanish is the existence of the third element within the opposition “confirmation – negation” which is supposed to be the subcategory of doubt, realized in speech in a great number of lexical and grammar forms. The analysis of meanings within this category helps to reveal the language potential in the expression of “hidden”, “incomplete” negation, as well as its shades. On the other hand, the usage of negation in modality structures with the meaning of doubt and uncertainty is a separate area of investigation, which helps to reveal some additional functions of negation within the category of modality.

Finally the author considers the usage of negation forms in the speech context, where one of their peculiarities turned to be the ability to convey some expressive meanings appealing to a particular reaction of the interlocutor.

Thus the study revealed a number of functional properties of the negation category in Spanish, realized within different communicative contexts.
