Abstract. Identifying the symbolism of the layout and location of mosques on a given territory in the pre-revolutionary period is an important aspect in the study of Muslim culture. The study is devoted to studying the features of the location of mosques in foreign yurts of the Tobolsk district and identifying mosques in which civil registration was carried out. The choice of the geographical object of study was due to the fact that the Tobolsk district was superior to all other territories of Siberia in the presence of Tatar yurts and the number of mosques.

The relevance of the study is due to the involvement in the analysis of little-studied sources stored in the State Archives of Tobolsk and the National Archives of the Republic of Bashkortostan — mosque books of the Tobolsk province of the 19th — early 20th centuries, written in the Old Tatar language in Arabic script and containing information about «births, marriages, divorces and deaths» It is noted that by the end of the 19th century, a column appeared in them, in which information about the opening date of the temple was recorded.

In the course of the study, the authors come to the conclusion that the construction of a mosque in a particular locality was determined by geographical factors (swampiness, presence of water barriers) and the absence/presence of nearby foreign yurts.

It was revealed that Tatar yurts in the Tobolsk district were geographically located in three main directions: on the left/right side of the rivers, on a country road / on a country road, along the postal route.

The scientific significance of the study of mosques in the Tobolsk province and handwritten documents compiled by parish imams is due to the relevance of preserving and studying the cultural heritage of the Siberian Tatars.

The revealed nature of the location of mosques in Tatar yurts can be used in the reconstruction of the historical territory and topography of settlements.
