Abstract. The article is devoted to the problems of studying the history of interpretation of myth as a cultural phenomenon. The purpose of the study is to identify the specifics of the interpretation of myth in the context of its formation as a cultural phenomenon. As part of the work done, the works of outstanding scientists dealing with the origin of myth, as well as reference materials that served as the basis for the analysis of its interpretations were studied. In the article, the genesis of interpretations is presented within the framework of theoretical concepts of the origin of myth identified by the author. The author examines the conceptual apparatus of myth, relying on: linguistic, ritualistic, psychoanalytic, sociological and animistic theories. As a result of studying the material, the features of the formation of the concept of myth as a cultural phenomenon were revealed. The considered concepts made it possible to analyze the myth from different sides and reveal its elements included in its terminological apparatus. Analysis of theories showed that the origins of myth lie deep in the popular consciousness. Myth is the result of a complex thought process, which contains a set of primitive knowledge about the world around us. Its formation took place under the influence of language, lifestyle, psychological characteristics of people and many other factors. In each of these areas, unique properties of myth were revealed, which distinguished it from other genres of oral folklore. The article is addressed to researchers in the humanities, as well as a wide audience of readers interested in the topic of myth-making.
