Abstract. The article is devoted to consideration of the specifics of the formation and functioning of textual modality in short story narrative. The current direction of modern linguistics is the study of literary text based on the identification of linguistic mechanisms that allow the author to establish systemic relationships between text segments, which determines the special significance of the narrative approach. The research methods are semantic and communicative-pragmatic analysis, and the method of philological interpretation. Text modality is considered in the narrative as a grammatical category applicable to discursive practices and as a communicative-pragmatic category that allows for text formation. For the study of short story narrative, this perspective in the interpretation of textual modality turns out to be potentially heuristic: both directions mutually determine each other, revealing multidimensional connections. During the analysis of the story by A.I. Kuprin’s «The Lilac Bush» as a novelistic narrative, it is established that the author’s assessment and the very presence of the author as a narrating authority are implicit: this allows us to highlight the modality of the character. At the same time, the author’s and character’s modalities reveal interaction at all levels of the literary text, but only the author’s ironic assessment is explicated, which must be adequately interpreted when perceiving the literary text. Textual modality is characterized by its implementation through the preferential use of particles, conjunctions, expressive vocabulary, introductory words and inserted structures, and various figurative and expressive means (primarily comparisons). Markers of authorial modality were found in plot episodes that are not characterized by significant semantic load. As a result, the psychologism of the story «The Lilac Bush» remains implicit in order to preserve the novelistic intrigue so that the plot twists remain unexpected for the reader.
