Abstract. This article examines the verbalization of the image of the Bacchic man in the works of Leo Tolstoy. The relevance of the study is due to its entry into the circle of studies related to the study of the author’s idiostyle. The material for the study was a sample of contexts with bacchanalian vocabulary, i.e. those lexical units whose semantics are related to the situation of wine drinking, namely, characterize a person who drinks alcohol, his/her appearance, emotional and physiological state, manner of speech and features of gait and behavior in general. The research is based on the author’s famous novels “War and Peace”, “Anna Karenina”, “Resurrection”, as well as some short stories. It is revealed that the main assessment in the representation of the situation of wine drinking and the person in it is social and, in a broad context, ethical, explicating the philosophical and ideological views of the author. It is noted that the cheerful lexeme and its derivatives (poveselet’ ‘cheer up’, veselo ‘have fun’, vesel’chak ‘merry’, etc.) in the “bacchanalian” context become markers of a certain style of behavior and routine of life, evaluated in a negative way and, as a result, a social class with a certain stereotype of behavior is distinguished. The author emphasizes that a distinctive feature in the description of the appearance or condition of a bacchanalian person is perception “from the outside”, and not “from the inside”, a sensory assessment given to the character by the author or another hero. The detail of the event series in the works of L.N. Tolstoy allows you to gradually move from the level of perceptual assessments (olfactory, visual, etc.) to the level of the spiritual world of the hero and explicate the ethical, philosophical views of the author.
