Abstract. The article analyzes a new sphere of functioning of the national languages of the Russian Federation — the sphere of the Internet space. This issue was considered during the interview on the example of the Kalmyk language community of the Republic of Kalmykia, where in 2020–2021. a comprehensive sociolinguistic study was carried out.
The study is based on methodological triangulation, which is an analysis of autobiographical narratives / language biographies of informants (interviews), an analysis of public debates regarding diversity (media corpus) and an analysis of official language management (official documents on language policy, etc.). Analyzing network resources, social networks, applications, blogs in the Kalmyk language, the author discusses the effectiveness of this approach in preserving the national languages of Russia. Particular attention is paid to educational virtual resources in the Kalmyk language, the problems that the modern Kalmyk language faces, for example, the digital divide, are analyzed. An analysis of communities in modern social networks such as Vkontakte and You Tube revealed that these platforms are actively used to popularize and promote the Kalmyk language in society. In addition to social networks, applications available in the GooglePlay and AppStore stores (for example, Mana Dun, etc.) that operate on mobile phones, where the Kalmyk language is also represented, are effective and progressive resources for learning the language. Thus, we can conclude that the Kalmyk language in the Internet space is represented by sources in which it most often co-functions with the Russian language, applications and groups on social networks are used proactively to learn the Kalmyk language.
