The dynamic of the associative meaning of the word “doctor” during the period of the corona virus disease pandemic

Abstract. Today the corona virus disease pandemic has already influenced and continues influencing all spheres of social live. New conditions of social being have reflected the language. Significant changes in associative meaning of words take place every twenty years, especially under the influence of different social, political and economical factors. Thus, in this article the author analyzed diachronic changes of associative/psycholinguistic meaning of the word “doctor”, considering the influence of corona virus disease pandemic. The material for comparative analysis is taken from Russian associative dictionary (2002), Russian regional associative dictionary of European part of Russia (2014), Russian regional associative dictionary of Siberia and The Far East (2014) and also the results of own experiment, which was carried out in autumn in 2021. The author has proved quantitative and qualitative changes of associative meaning of the verbal unit under research. Under the influence of corona virus disease pandemic the image of the doctor is more often associated with actions, objects, location and less often with subject, characteristic, especially neutral. Such modifications can be possibly determined by information agenda about sickness rate dynamic and about epidemiologic measures, taken by medical staff. The author underlines the stable connection of the notion “doctor” with the subject, who makes medical manipulations, the value of which has increased during corona virus disease pandemic. With time doctor’s activities have arisen trust, respect, hope for salvation. Relying on the analysis conducted, the author emphasizes that the characteristics of medical profession is less significant, but mostly described with positive connotations. The percentage of reactions which describe doctors’ professionalism and competence has increased.
