Abstract. There is no doubt that politics is one of the most important parts of modern life. Hence studying political texts seems to be of great relevance. Most political speeches are not spontaneous as there are teams that work on preparing them. Thus, it is possible to talk about the intentional use of different manipulative tactics by speechwriters and to study the tactics used. The authors of the paper address demagogy in English political texts as one of manipulative tactics in order to describe the applied demagogic techniques. The authors scrutinize the texts of Donald Trump’s speeches. Text interpretation, the methods of description and analysis allowed the authors to find the text material and analyze the use of demagogy as a manipulative tactic. The authors consider a classification of manipulation types, prove that demagogy is a manipulative tactic, and analyze demagogic techniques by an example of English political texts. The results of the paper can serve for the further study of political discourse and insincere discourse. However, the paper might also be engaging for a wide range of readers interested in politics and manipulative tactics used by politicians in their speeches.
