Abstract. The penitentiary society is considered to be one of the forms of a closed (isolated) social system (environment). Its closed nature also determines the communicative practice that can be implemented in these social conditions. There are two parallel communication systems that can be implemented by those sentenced to imprisonment — «formal» and informal. The first one is broadcast by representatives of the correctional institution administration. The second is convicts who belong to the so-called penitentiary community. Based on the empirical data he has obtained, the author examines the extent and factors of the spread of distrust in penitentiary society during various forms of communication. The results of the study show how the nature and level of trust changes as the convicts’ prison experience increases. In particular, empiricism records a change in the nature of trust among convicts serving in high-security penal colonies for persons who had previously served their sentences. In particular, there is a decrease in the level of trust in other convicts.; representatives of the correctional institution administration; relatives and other persons with whom convicts can communicate (lawyers, representatives of human rights organizations). Statistics show that convicts regard such an experience as negative. According to the author, this may act as a certain kind of obstacle in the implementation of various communicative practices that can be implemented in a penitentiary society. This can be a serious obstacle to the realization of the goals of criminal punishment in the form of imprisonment. The data obtained in the course of the study may well correspond to the idea that social relations in a penitentiary society cannot be characterized by a high degree of trust.
