Abstract. Toponymy is interesting both from linguistic and historical and ethnographic points of view. Using the example of a heroic song, the article examines the specifics of the toponymic system geographically associated with the name of the patron spirit Tа̄gt-Kotil Ōjka, the «Bogatyr of the Middle Reaches of the Severnaya Sosva River». One of the most significant events in his life was a battle and a victory over Мēŋkv, the relict forest humanoid giant, hostile to humans. As a result of that victory unusual place names appeared in the possessions of the Bogatyr, called by things and body parts of Мēŋkv: Pōrykhsup «Island of a Part of the Body», Pēshchluv Vōl ‘Stretch of the Thighbone, Pōlkhos-Tūr «Lake of the Spleen», Mа̄n Sōpak-Lōmt Tump «Island of a Small Piece of the Boot», etc.

As a conclusion, it is noted that the Mansi geographical terminology is a proven, well-developed system of designations. The complexity of the toponymic description is generated by the specifics of the natural environment, the urgent need for comprehensive exploration of space, the lifestyle of hunters and fishermen, and the pagan worldview, which allowed the bearers of traditional culture to associate myths with specific geographical objects. Among the Mansi names, the word jalpyŋ ‘holy, sacred’ is characterized by great social significance. Toponyms with this lexeme indicate the prohibition of the corresponding place, due to the fact that fish spawning grounds and animal breeding grounds are located there. Tа̄gt-Kotil Ōjka’s possessions are located in the middle reaches of the Severnaya Sosva River, and this territory is indicated by the border toponyms given in the study.
