Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the linguistic representation of fictionality in travel notes as a special type of text that combines documentary and fictional characteristics. The analysis of the theoretical and empirical material has shown that the documentary characteristics of travel notes include the presence of a route, the image of the author, and the factuality of the description. The traveler is an active participant of the events. Following a planned route, he records reliable facts and expresses his subjective view. The primary task of the writer is to create a credible image of Russians. The image of Russians in the travel notes that are under analysis is specific. Its representation is presented through the prism of the author’s individual perception, which involves a certain degree of imagination. The paper is also an attempt to show the difference between the two notions: «fiction» and «fictionality». Fiction is the modeling of a new, imaginary world, which is characteristic of fiction texts. Fictionality is a compulsory characteristic of travel notes as nonfiction texts. In this context, fictionality means the result of the author’s mental activity, represented by various linguistic means. The fictional characteristics of travel notes include the author’s subjectivity, evaluation and imagological image of Russia.The author’s subjectivity and evaluation in representing the image of Russians presuppose a certain degree of imagination and speculation. The author’s presence in a foreign culture intensifies the process of imagination, which presupposes a certain degree of distance from reality.
