Abstract. The article deals with a comparative analysis of phraseological units denoting the intellectual abilities of a person in the Avar and Russian languages. The relevance of studying the phraseology of the Avar language as one of the state languages of Dagestan is substantiated. A comparative analysis of phraseological units denoting the intellectual abilities of a person in the Avar and Russian languages has been carried out. The semantic groups of phraseological units in both languages are determined. It was revealed that the gradation of intellectual abilities in the Avar language allows us to define mind/stupidity as a state (smart by gender/status), as a process and as a result. It is noted that the phraseological units studied in both languages have a similarity of semantic groups, however, it should be noted that in the Russian language their composition is presented more extensively. It was revealed that the Avar language does not show the development of mental abilities throughout a person’s life, in particular, the process of their acquisition/accumulation, as well as their loss. For the most part, the fact of the presence/absence of the mind, compliance/non-compliance with the norm, as well as the relationship of intellectual abilities with one or another type of activity is stated. It is concluded that both languages are characterized by figurativeness, emotional coloring, frequent use of combinations with the word «head», as well as the relationship with knowledge, experience, and the ability to understand something. It is noted that in the Russian language the process of acquiring the mind throughout a person’s life is most clearly traced, while for the Avar language the fact of the presence/absence of the mind and the mind as a result of a certain activity is characteristic for the most part.
