Abstract. The goal of the article is to reveal the relationship between spatial representation and socio-cultural organization of society. For this purpose the comparative analysis of spatial representations of two historical stages of the European culture development – Greek Antiquity and the Middle Ages – is made. To solve this problem, the author takes into consideration the fact that the socio-historical living conditions of a community form a certain, quite fixed spatial feeling, which is expressed in religious beliefs, in the direction of scientific research and philosophical reflection, in social and political set-up. Spatial representation prevailing in certain historical period influenced the formation of socio-cultural relations within a particular cultural paradigm – the idea, which could obviously been traced through a specific socio-cultural context. Moreover, specific spatial perception as a part of holistic worldview indicates some basic idea, or cultural “attractor” of this or that socio-cultural paradigm. It is known that for both Ancient Greek civilization and the Middle Ages, the worldview was based on the idea of harmony. However, for the two European epochs, the understanding of this idea differs so fundamentally that the author found it possible to figuratively allude to two Europes, with the reference to Oswald Spengler’s idea of each great epoch having its own worldview and speaking its own language. Thus, the article raises the question of the interdependence of spatial representation immanent to a particular culture and the general socio-cultural context of this culture in their connection with the main idea – “attractor”.
