Abstract. The article analyzes the place and role of religion in modern cultural diversity. Religion is understood as a constituent part of culture and one of the foundations of cultural identity, civilizational characteristics and an indicator of identity. It also contains a comparative analysis of the education system, including religious education (in Russia and France). An empirical substantiation of the sentiments of Moscow residents in relation to culture, religion and values is given based on the results of a study carried out in the conditions of the crisis by the Center for the Sociology of Religion and Socio-Cultural Processes of the ISPI FCISC RAS with the participation of the author in the spring of 2020.

The author suggests that religious education could, to a certain extent, compensate for a certain «spiritual hunger» inherent in the present Russian people, assuming, for the most part, a path to self-improvement and a righteous life. This will become possible when developing mechanisms aimed at reducing excessive consumption, at the formation of harmonious relations between the individual and society, the value-semantic space of a modern person, at the development of a conceptually new understanding of universal human spiritual values, their rethinking in the context of globalization.
