Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of expressive possibilities of transmitting someone else’s speech stylistically and expressively marked complex sentences in unrelated languages. The object of the study was the Mari and French languages. The Mari language belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of the Uralic family of languages and has a relatively young written tradition. The German language, part of the Germanic group of languages, originated around the second half of the VII century and has a rich written tradition. The subject of our comparative study is someone else’s speech in a complex sentence in the Mari and German languages from the position of its expressive and stylistic possibilities in the different structural languages: Mari and German. The theoretical and methodological basis of the research is based on works related to Finno-Ugric, Russian and German linguistics. The descriptive method and methods of stylistic, syntactic and comparative analysis are used in the work. Complex sentences with someone else’s speech from works of fiction in Mari and German were used as factual sources. In the compared languages, someone else’s speech is represented by direct, indirect and non-direct types of speech. The analysis of foreign speech in modern Mari and German languages shows that the use of foreign speech in works of fiction gives it an expressive assessment of colloquiality and performs characterological functions. The author’s words and intonation, reflected in punctuation marks, act as the syntactic center of the utterance. Despite the different significance and stylistic coloring of the alien forms, all of its types give figurativeness and originality to artistic works in both the Mari and German languages.
