Abstract. The article is devoted to the semantics of the word «mediation», which is used in the professions of mediator and translator/interpreter. The relevance of the study is related to the dynamics of modern social transformations and changes in the professional structure of society. With the emergence of new professions in the helping field and the expansion of the functions of specialists, the issues of an adequate understanding of the language units used become relevant. In the article the author considers the peculiarities of mediation and translation as two communicative helping professions and analyzes the time when the word «mediation» entered the Russian language for the profession of mediator and for the profession of translator. As a result of summarizing a large-scale analysis of data on word usage in linguistics and translation studies, the author identifies vectors for understanding the word «mediation» in the translation profession. The article emphasizes the main and additional functions of mediator and interpreter and draws attention to the intersection and interpenetration of the professional fields. In the translation field, the use of the word «mediation» as an independent term is related to questions of the appropriateness of considering integrative functions in situations of cultural/intercultural interaction. The word «mediation» is often used as a synonym for the broadly defined word «mediation» and as a fancy calque from English to try to say something new about translation. In the field of mediation, the intersection of the professional functions of mediator and interpreter is observed in ethnocultural mediation, when the mediator along with the function of conflict resolution performs the interlingual and intercultural functions. The author sees the solution to the problem of differences in the understanding of the word «mediation» in overcoming the interprofessional impenetrability of mediation and translation.
