Abstract. Derivational possibilities of abbreviations are comprehensively studied by modern linguists. Nevertheless, the insufficient study of the word-formation possibilities of abbreviations with a foreign language component in the Russian language determines the choice relevance of the article’s subject. The study subject is a family of words, the top of which are abbreviations of foreign origin. The article attempts to comprehensively examine the family of words structural features of this type, to reveal their derivational potential, to describe the word-formation and lexical properties of their derivatives. Based on multivariate analysis of data extracted from explanatory dictionaries and dictionaries of abbreviations, the author draws the following conclusions: abbreviation derivatives with a foreign-language component represent a separate microsystem developing mainly according to the laws common to the word-formation system of the Russian language as a whole. Just like the family of words with a word of Russian origin at the top, the activity of a borrowed lexeme in the word-forming process is determined by its linguistic and extra-linguistic characteristics, the degree of its entry into the socio-cultural space. As a result of the family of words structure analysis, it was found that the mechanism of word-formation from abbreviations from bases of borrowed origin differs somewhat from the mechanism of derivative formation from Russian bases. The relations of successive derivation are less developed in them, mainly such family of words unfold according to the paradigmatic type, and the main ways of word formation are different. The first place is given to the method of stem-composition, and then to suffixation. The analysis of the linguistic material has shown that some derivatives formed from bases of borrowed origin are characterised by vivid expressiveness and evaluation. This peculiarity is transferred to the abbreviant in the process of word production by means of attaching stylistically marked word-forming affixes or lexemes.
