Abstract. The article analyzes indicators characterizing the demographic situation in towns and cities of the Altai Territory in 2018–2022. In the cities of Barnaul, Biysk and Rubtsovsk, a decrease in population was observed in the analyzed period, which is associated with an excess of mortality over the birth rate. Migration growth does not compensate for the negative values of natural growth.

The study revealed that socio-economic conditions in large and large cities of the Altai Territory (Barnaul, Biysk, Rubtsovsk) are generally characterized by an increase in indicators in 2018–2022.

The purpose of the study is to identify strong correlations between socio-economic factors and indicators characterizing the demographic situation in towns and cities of the Altai Territory. An analysis of the relationships between socio-economic and demographic indicators was carried out using the SPSS 20 program (pair correlation method). As a result of the study, strong opposite correlations were identified in Barnaul between the arrival rate and a number of indicators: average monthly nominal salary for the year (per 1 000 people); total living area (per 1 000 people); retail trade turnover (per 1 000 people). Strong correlations were also revealed in the city of Barnaul between the total fertility rate and the following indicators: average monthly nominal salary for the year (per 1 000 people); the total area of residential premises (per 1 000 people), as well as between the average annual resident population and the total area of residential premises (per 1 000 people).

When analyzing the relationships, strong opposite correlations were identified in both the cities of Biysk and Rubtsovsk between the average annual resident population and the following indicators: average monthly nominal salary for the year (per 1 000 people); total living area (per 1 000 people); retail trade turnover (per 1 000 people); cost of shipped goods of own production (per 1 000 people). In the city of Biysk, strong opposite correlations were identified between the average annual resident population and the volume of investment in fixed capital (without budget) (per 1 000 people). In the city of Rubtsovsk there were strong linear correlations of socio-economic indicators: the crude birth rate and the volume of investment in fixed assets (without budget) (per 1 000 people).

The authors came to the conclusion that when developing a socio-economic policy both at the level of the Altai Territory and the Russian Federation as a whole, it is advisable to take into account the identified significant relationships between socio-economic factors and demographic indicators.
