Abstract. Linguistic analysis of a poetic text is very important because its language is multifaceted. The language of a poetic text lives according to its own laws, which differ from the life of a natural language; it has special mechanisms for generating artistic sense. In the study of linguistic units, there are identified means and methods of creating expressiveness of a literary text. The main task of linguistic analysis is to identify and explain the linguistic facts used in a literary text in their meaning and use. Linguistic analysis allows us to understand the picture of the figurative nature of words and expressions, artistic value and novelty of linguistic phenomena. The relevance of this work is that there can be no complete analysis of a literary work without linguistic analysis. The authors present the analysis of the linguistic features of «Heather Ale», the famous work of English writer and poet Robert Louis Stevenson. It is of great interest from a linguistic point of view. The aim of the work is to analyze various aspects of the language of the ballad: phonetic, lexical, stylistic, syntactic. The practical significance of this work lies in the fact that the techniques and methods of the linguistic analysis of Stevenson’s ballad “Heather Ale” can be used in the analysis of other poetic works. In the article the authors focus on the means that give the text imagery, brightness and uniqueness. In the course of the research, the authors came to the conclusion that in his work the author uses various linguistic means, such as alliteration, metaphor, inversion and other means, which is justified in poetic works.
