Abstract. The article deals with the problem of the relationship between I.A. Bunin’s language and artistic thinking. Its relevance is determined by the interest of linguists in identifying the uniqueness of the author’s individual lexicon as the quintessence of the writer’s worldview and perception of the world; the limited study of a number of semantic and semantic-grammatical dominants in his prose and poetry texts; and the significance of phytonymic vocabulary in Bunin’s language. The purpose of the article is to identify the syntagmatic connections and the role of the lexeme “forest” (лес) in the structural organization of the sentences in I.A. Bunin’s texts. The study was based on data from the National Corpus of the Russian Language, which includes 767 Bunin’s poems and 99 prose texts. A total of 542 examples were extracted from these texts for analysis. It has been established that in the writer’s literary texts, the lexeme «forest» (лес) has two close but not identical meanings: «a multitude of trees» and «a space filled with trees». Thanks to this, it functions both as a phytonym and as a topophlorism. The article describes the difference in the syntagmatic compatibility of the phytonym «forest» (лес) and the topophlorism «forest» (лес) with substantives, adjectives, and predicates; it also notes the use of the phytonym «forest» (лес) in the structure of sentences with the semantics of «existence of an object’s feature», «other existence of an object», and «state of nature»; and the use of the topophorism «forest» (лес) in sentences with the semantics of «state of nature», «existence of an object», and «independent movement of an agent». The authors conclude that the syntagmatics of the lexeme «forest» (лес) and its use in sentences of a certain structural organization indicate that I.A. Bunin created forest landscapes that combine material concreteness and ephemerality, as well as the unity of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and olfactory modalities.
