Abstract. The article analyzes Chuvash riddles through the prism of two fundamental cultural codes such as anthroponymic and numerical ones. The material for the study was riddles extracted from the collection of Chuvash riddles «Тупмалли юмахсем», which simultaneously include the number and name of a person. The authors emphasize that the world presented in the text of the riddle is anthropomorphic. The number is both a marker of normality or abnormality. When «human» characteristics are attributed to objects, the norm is usually associated with human bodies or physiological processes. The external appearance of a person is understood through the social structure of the world, with hands representing families with five children or households. Kinship terms also play a significant role in these riddles. Sometimes, a person is compared to the external environment or the natural world. Then, there is a number of objects in the surrounding world that can be found in the person themselves. An abnormal number of body parts or atypical objects indicate an encoding of a denotation from the field of artifacts. For example, two faces (Chuv. икĕ питлĕ), two heads (Chuv. икĕ пуçлă), one thousand forty eyes (Chuv. пин, хĕрĕх куç), or one hand (Chuv. хăрах алă), etc. are markers of household items such as a towel (Chuv. сĕлкĕ), a thimble (Chuv. пӳрнеске), etc. A person’s name (along with a number) participates in the «game» semantic and/or onomatopoeic encoding of the denotation.
