Abstract. This article examines one of the early works of Benedict Mart, the story «The Bottle of Tian-Shi-Ne», from the perspective of structural and communicative syntax, as well as the narrative structure of the text. This analysis is conducted for the first time. The article provides a brief summary and ideological-thematic characterization of the story. The type of narrator is identified, and their point of view is characterized. The results of the analysis demonstrate the use of figurative (narrative and descriptive) registers to reflect the narrator’s perspective and depict their internal state. The nature of the connection between descriptive and narrative registers is analyzed. A conclusion is drawn regarding the nature of description and the absence of a preferred method for depicting internal states. The article discusses the differences between dialogue and monologue in terms of sentence structure and predominant communicative types of speech. It identifies and describes techniques of expressive syntax (questions, exclamations, pauses) found in character statements, concluding with differences in how these techniques are employed by characters. Tian-Shi-Ne’s remarks contain explanations and reasoning; they are lengthy, elaborate, and include complex sentences with logical relationships. In contrast, the narrator’s remarks consist of stimulus questions, brief answers, explanations of feelings or thoughts, and include complex explanatory sentences alongside simple, non-extended sentences consisting of a single word. The analysis of dialogue reveals how Tian-Shi-Ne’s utterances influence the sequence of actions reflected in the monologic part, as well as the revelation of the narrator’s internal conflict. The results of analyzing descriptions of external space in both the narrator’s speech and Tian-Shi-Ne’s statements serve as a basis for determining the genre of the story as fantasy.
