Abstract. This paper examines the role of punctuation in English and it’s history. English is one of the European languages, so English has some common punctuation characteristics with other languages, such as French, Spanish, German, including Russian. However, since punctuation reflects the rhythm and intonation of the language and melody, and English has unique phonetics and intonation characteristics, punctuation marks have their own rules of use.

We will examine the history of the comma, full stop and other mark, as well as the construction of simple and complex sentences. This paper is about the use of commas and other marks, as well as their function in a sentence. Among Russian authors, T.G. Evtushenko, D.R. Nasretdinova, L.V. Merzlyakova, N.V. Mayzenger, as well as G.F. Gaifutdinova and Yu.A. Kalimullina dealt with punctuation issues. Punctuation is poorly studied at universities and is practically not discussed in schools. Often, students of various specialties, and then specialists of different professions have the poor skills of communication in English. Although communication in English is very important in modern realities: lawyers and engineers, designers, marketers, financiers, builders, etc. communicate with each other in English. The ability to correctly build complex sentences is based on the correct use of punctuation marks.
