Abstract. The article analyzes the use of the image of death in the story of I.A. Bunin «Village». The influence of the author’s position, the writer’s worldview during the difficult period of revolutionary events in Russia on his artistic method is considered, the purpose of using the image of death in creating a special artistic style of the story «Village» is identified.

The story is considered in light of the aggravated attitude to death, which, as you know, was the stable state of the writer and the quality of his perception of the world. In the story «Village», the author reflects on life and death, on the meaning of being, on the purpose of man on earth in a difficult period of already impending grandiose changes in Russia. On the example of Durnovka, which becomes a symbol of a typical Russian village, Bunin shows the destruction of the fundamental foundations of the national life of Russia at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries. The author analyses the abundance of tanatological metaphors and epithets used by Bunin in the story which complement the picture of the inevitable death of the village. The main characters of the story are shown in such a way that it becomes clear that representatives of the «old world», the former patriarchal Russia, must give way to «new people» who are ready to destroy and destroy everything that was created before them. The changes that replace the previous way of life cause Bunin’s rejection and are associated with death. The author concludes that the image of death in the story symbolizes the destruction of the «old world».
