Abstract. The article analyzes the novel of I.S. Turgenev «The History of Lieutenant Ergunov» from the point of view of turning to the romantic literary tradition in order to recreate the image of a bygone era. It is argued that I.S. Turgenev saturates the work with a complex of motives, images and details associated with the culture of romanticism, and gives preference to those that have become the most recognizable due to the popularity of the genre of the romantic story and the works of specific authors (E.T.A. Hoffmann, A.S. Pushkin, M.Yu. Lermontov, V.F. Odoevsky, A. Pogorelsky, etc.). This complex includes artistic features of the image of a romantic hero, principles of depicting female characters, as well as techniques for organizing artistic space, features of poetics and compositional structure of the work.
In particular, the article points out that I.S. Turgenev complicates the artistic image of the protagonist with the help of features that are not typical of a romantic hero, namely, when creating the image of Ergunov, I.S. Turgenev combines literary associations, romantic irony and elements of a naturalistic essay. It is also noted that the images of female characters are built on the basis of their connection with the typically romantic cultural-geographical and literary contexts of Western Europe and the East. The author of the article draws attention to the fact that I.S. Turgenev uses such characteristic techniques of romantic literature as an appeal to fantasy, the depiction of borderline states of consciousness and various metamorphoses of the material world, primarily space. At the same time, it is noted that in this story, romantic patterns of plot and characters are rethought, filled with realistic content, but the general pathos of the work of art remains romantic. It is concluded that the role of the romantic literary tradition in the formation of a holistic image of a bygone era and the artistic potential of its interaction with the features of the new, realistic artistic method were for I.S. Turgenev’s fundamentally significant.
