Pragmatics of metatextual elements in postmodern literary discourse

Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the pragmatics of metatextual elements in postmodern literary discourse, which aim to actualize the interaction of the author with the reader in specific communicative conditions, modeled by the producer of postmodern literary discourse himself. It is revealed that postmodern literary discourse should be studied as a unity of text and metatext, while the description of metatextual elements in a pragmatic aspect allows us to determine their role in organizing the author’s individual picture of the world, structuring its value components, and identifying the features of the communicative repertoire of the author’s linguistic personality. Based on the analysis of linguistic material — the text of the postmodern novel by A. Bitov «Pushkin House» — the author of the article comes to the conclusion about metatextual elements as a reflection of the transformation of the understanding of the tasks of literary creativity in the postmodern era. The pragmatic functions of metatext manifest the author’s desire to verbalize the very process of creating a literary text, to comprehend its impact on the reader, to consider the specifics of literary images created by the creative efforts of the author, from the standpoint of the science of literature. Significant in terms of the implementation of the pragmatics of the metatext is the production of the illusion of the reality of the character, which the author himself deconstructs with the help of metatextual elements. Postmodern literary discourse is characterized by a multidimensional use of irony, which, in the coordinates of metatextual elements, is characterized by a focus on the very nature of the author’s creative process and his attitude to the world and himself. The main pragmatic function of metatextual elements is the decoding of literary discourse in its semantic dominants, while the receptive-interpretative activity of the reader is realized in the direction that the author sets. The study of metatextual elements in postmodern literary discourse allows us to interpret such discourse from the standpoint of ontology (as a way and conditions of being), axiology (a set of value components of an individual author’s picture of the world), epistemology (cognition of literary meanings).
