Abstract. The article presents the experience of functioning of a rehabilitation center providing rehabilitation services to disabled children and their parents (legal representatives) in the comprehensive rehabilitation and habilitation of disabled children within the framework of a pilot project. It is indicated that the majority of parents, both mothers and fathers, occupy a dominant position, which reduces the effectiveness of the rehabilitation process. Parents with a mentoring position are focused on the guidance of a disabled child, which is often transferred to specialists in the rehabilitation process. A fairly large percentage of parents with a rejecting position when the parent is not interested in the current situation of a disabled child. There are few parents with a partner position that differs in maturity and adequacy of interaction with a disabled child and specialists in the rehabilitation process.
The parental position taken correlates with the psychological type of the parent of a disabled child. Most parents have an authoritarian type of interaction with a disabled child, which is characterized by a desire to be guided by their own beliefs, including on rehabilitation issues. Parents with a psychosomatic psychological type are characterized by more frequent changes of polar moods, some of them have a greater tendency to dominance, characteristic of authoritarian parents. The neurotic psychological type is distinguished by a passive personal position, justification of one’s own inactivity in relation to the development of a disabled child and a lack of understanding that some of the shortcomings that arise in a child are secondary and are no longer the result of a biological defect, but of the parent’s own personal insolvency.
The results of the study of the competence of parents of disabled children indicate a low level of understanding by parents of their tasks in the rehabilitation of disabled children.
It is emphasized that the use of only diagnostic tools in the form of questionnaires and questionnaires as self-assessment tools always reduce the reliability of the data obtained. Therefore, the author believes that the use of observation as an additional and qualitative diagnostic method allows to obtain adequate information that affects the effectiveness of the rehabilitation process.
