Abstract. The paper deals with the variation of case forms in toponyms and the standardization of variable toponyms based on the material of the State Catalogue of Geographical Names of the Russian Federation involving cartographic, reference sources, legal acts. The author notes the incomplete picture of this type of toponymic variation in Russian toponymy and emphasizes the relevance of the research to improve the process of toponymic standardization. Following the traditions of Russian toponymy and developing the subject, the author attributes the variation of case forms in toponyms to morphological variation. The article provides dozens of examples of toponyms that have been standardized in recent years and have experienced this type of variation. It is noted that variation of case forms, namely nominative and genitive forms, is observed in memorial toponyms and ergonymic toponyms, i.e. toponyms formed from the names of economic, industrial and other objects located in these localities. The analysis of toponymic variants allows the author to conclude about the general trend of using nominative forms of toponyms. This trend is manifested in the nominativization of memorial toponyms due to the loss of the word name/memory from the toponym, as well as of those toponyms that were originally used in the genitive. The variation of the genitive and nominative forms of ergonymic toponyms is recognized by the author as the result of artificial codification of the genitive forms of toponyms amid the spread of nominative forms in speech, reflecting the natural development of toponyms.
