Abstract. This article analyzes the indicators characterizing the demographic situation in the Altai Territory and the Kurgan Region in 2019–2023.

The purpose of the study is to identify strong correlations between socio-economic factors and indicators characterizing the demographic situation in the studied regions of the Russian Federation.

The population structure is quite similar in the Altai Territory and the Kurgan Region: by the share of the rural population, by the ethnic composition, by the proportion of people under and over the working age. With a fairly similar population structure, the regions differ significantly in the values of crude death rates and migration outflow, while the birth rates had close values in the analyzed period.

Based on the results of the correlation analysis of the indicators, relationships were revealed between socio-economic factors and demographic indicators in the Kurgan Region and the Altai Territory, namely, strong opposite correlations of the birth rate and the following indicators: the subsistence minimum; the average annual pension; average per capita monetary income of the population, volume of shipped goods of own production, performed works and services; gross regional product; investments in fixed capital.

When analyzing the relationships in the regions under study, the following strong direct correlations were found between the birth rate and the following socio-economic indicators: number of people with monetary incomes below the subsistence level; number of unemployed people aged 15 years and older.

At the same time, when analyzing the relationships, some differences were found in the regions under study. Strong direct correlations were found between the indicators of the number of employed population and the net migration rate in the Kurgan region When analyzing data for the Altai Territory, the following strong opposite correlations were noted between the infant mortality rate and a number of socio-economic indicators: the subsistence level; average annual nominal accrued wages of workers; average per capita monetary income of the population. The following strong direct correlations between the infant mortality rate and socio-economic indicators were also identified: the number of unemployed people aged 15 years and older; the number of people with incomes below the subsistence level.

Thus, to improve the demographic situation in the Altai Territory and Kurgan Region, a comprehensive approach is needed that combines economic incentives, social support and cultural changes.
