Modeling the category of rationality of criticism in the culture of cancellation

Abstract. The article captures a new phenomenon for communicative linguistics in the form of the «cancellation culture». The author states that this phenomenon associated with confrontation has a great influence on the formation of values in society. At the same time papers, devoted to the analysis of the effect on the language system and communicative practice, are still sporadic. The request for the article is the rationale for the methodological basis for the study of the social boycott. The author offers a description of the cancellation culture technique from the point of view of discursive practice, then reveals the discursive dominant in the form of criticism. Case analysis showed that the elements of speech material contain the genre of discussion. This allowed author to use the method of pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation in the form of a model of critical discussion and the communicative code of its participants. This model makes it possible to analyze polylogical contexts in relation to ideal reasonableness. This makes it possible to place criticism of the cancellation culture within the framework of the procedure for coordinating dialectical and rhetorical discussion. The first dimension represents significant speech actions within the framework of constructive criticism, the second one shows what deviations from the standard of reasonableness the parties make. The rhetorical dimension of criticism is analyzed at three levels: the level of linguistic representation, the level of adaptation of the material to the auditory, and the level of logical organization of speech. The study shows that criticism in the culture of cancelling has a pronounced rhetorical dimension in the first and second manifestations. The systematic violation of the communicative code of rational discussion is realized at the lexical level in the form of neolexemes, pejorative vocabulary, means of expressive syntax. The second and the middle levels of significance are the logic of the reasoning of the initiators and participants in the discussion, but at the same time the bias of the topic under discussion. Typical errors of attacks on personality and genetic error of argumentation.
