Abstract. The article is consists of the study of the problems of the structure of toponyms in the linguistic-historical study of Avar geographical names. The study of geographical names remains one of the most important tasks of Dagestan, that is and Avar linguistics. Very heterogeneous both in terms of time of occurrence and in relation to various ethnolinguistic collectives, Avar toponymic names deserve independent study. The investigation of the structural characteristics of Avar place names, from the one hand, enables to describe those grammatical means which onomastics selects from the arsenal of common language things from the other hand, it helps to determine the nature of the names themselves. Representing specific linguistic units, they are primarily a linguistic source, the study of which reveals many aspects of the language. Nevertheless, until recently, the Avar toponymy remained out of sight of scholars of linguists.
Our study confirms the need to highlight the language criterion as the main one when establishing the scope of the concept of a toponymic system. The linguistic factor is especially important in identifying the connections and relationships that organize the language anderstudy in question, which is different in some respects from others similar to it. Nevertheless, despite the variety of structural forms of modern Avar toponymies, their distribution and correlation is somewhat dependent on the extra-linguistic factor, namely, the magnitude of the socio-historical significance of the named object. In general, it should be noted that the main oikonymic names within the historical settlement of the Avars retained a complex dibasic structure.
