Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of speech strategies and tactics in fantasy novels. The author has analyzed 87 examples of speech conflict situations from the fantasy trilogy of the modern American writer Nathan Long «Ulrika the Vampire». The fiction discourse of the fantasy genre is the process of interaction between the author and the reader, during which the former tries to make some kind of impression on the latter, often of a moral and ethical nature.
Based on scientific materials on the topic of speech strategies and tactics, as well as the analysis of literary examples, non-cooperative (confrontational and manipulative) strategies characteristic of this genre are highlighted. Following other researchers in this field, confrontational strategies include discrediting, verbal violence, and an invective strategy. In the category of manipulation strategies, based on the analysis of examples from literature, positive and negative image strategies were identified. In the process of analyzing examples, their features, characteristic tactics and factors influencing their success are revealed. Thus, a close connection was established between the tactics of threat and command in the strategy of verbal violence. The analysis of examples, using the stages of conflict development, revealed the genre-specific features of the unfolding of speech conflict situations, such as the frequent absence of a stage of conflict consequences.
The novelty of the research lies in identifying the features of confrontational and manipulative speech strategies and tactics used in the fantasy genre and considering them from the point of view of pragmalinguistics.
