Abstract. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of distance education in the context of global digital transformation. Based on an analysis of domestic and international scientific literature, as well as the regulatory framework (using the Republic of Uzbekistan as an example), the evolution of distance learning is explored — from 19th-century postal courses to modern artificial intelligence platforms. This article analyzes distance education as an effective form of organizing the educational process and social practice. The article presents the advantages of distance education for all categories of students, including women, who, during motherhood and family work, receive unique opportunities to acquire new knowledge and qualifications through distance learning.

The authors identify and thoroughly substantiate the key challenges and limitations of distance education and ways to overcome them: technical barriers and the «digital divide», the psychological difficulties of self-organization and maintaining learning motivation in a distance format, and other aspects that teachers and researchers point to as significant limitations to the effectiveness of distance education.
The authors demonstrate that distance education is not simply a technical channel for transmitting information, but a fundamentally new pedagogical system with its own methodology.

This article presents current trends in the development of distance education and promising approaches to its organization — artificial intelligence, adaptive learning, and hybrid technologies — as ways to improve the effectiveness of online learning. Based on the analysis, practical conclusions and recommendations are formulated for the three main aspects of distance education: students, teachers, and government education agencies.

Keywords: distance education; online learning; digital technologies; learning effectiveness; social inclusion; adaptive learning; hybrid learning; educational platforms
