Semantic and functional features of military vocabulary in the Khanty language

Abstract. Introduction. The article analyzes the military vocabulary of the Khanty language, the features of its functioning in the language. In the modern world, the vocabulary of the military sphere is in a state of dynamic development in the context of modern scientific and technological progress. The purpose of this study is to identify the semantic field and description of military terminology in the texts of the Khanty language, the use of these lexical units in the language.

Materials and methods. The material was the texts of articles on military subjects, dictionaries of the Khanty language. The study and description of this vocabulary was carried out using such methods as the method of lexicography, the allocation of semantic groups, the analysis of dictionary definitions, descriptive and analytical, as well as the method of contextual analysis. The object of the study is vocabulary from military-related articles. These articles are distinguished by the presence of a large number of terms, and therefore there is a need to describe the methods and features of their translation.

The results of the study. It is revealed that military vocabulary is used mainly in publications on military topics. Various classifications of military vocabulary are considered, based on the identification of certain significant aspects of the military industry. The author identifies thematic clusters of military vocabulary: words denoting a person by type of military activity, naming military personnel, military ranks and positions; «weapons and related items»; «military formations and units»; «military operations», «uniforms», «military awards». The most productive and numerous of them is the group: names of military equipment and weapons, names of weapons of destruction, in which the native Khanty vocabulary prevails. It includes 28 lexical units. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the fact that for the first time a description of military vocabulary is carried out based on the dialects of the Khanty language.

Conclusion. The conducted research made it possible to identify lexico-semantic clusters of military literature vocabulary. The results of the research can be used in the expansion of articles and dictionaries on military terminology.
